Herbal Teas and Infusions

During the winter, plants, are your allies and there is nothing nicer than warming oneself up with a nice cup of herbal teas while sitting comfortably on the couch. Aromatic plants, spices, fruits…..there’s no many combinations. But which plants should you choose to combine the useful with the delicious, particularly if you’re an active sportsperson?

Plants have many virtues: purifying, stimulating the muscles, toning and remineralising, all of which constitute a very interesting complement for the sports person.

Here are some of the most effective plants to maximise performance and optimise recovery.

Ginseng (Panax ginseng) is a well-known plant in China and Korea, its use dates back to ancient times. Taken before the activity, it helps endurance and facilitates recovery. It improves reflexes, allows the body to better adapt to the effort of training by reducing the feeling of fatigue. Taken after training, it decreases the level of lactic acid in the blood, increases the oxygenation of the cells and soothes muscular pains. Your energy levels quickly recover and you’ll be ready for further sporting achievements the following day.

Rhodiola (Rhodiola rosea) strengthens muscles. It increases performance and amplifies resistance to training. It is also cardio-protective as it regulates the cardiac muscle.

Nettle (Urtica Dioica) is rich in chlorophyll, vitamins and minerals, plus it’s easily assimilated. It is highly remineralising, alkalising and nourishing. It has the capacity to tone any tired organ by balancing the bodily functions. It supports training and increases staying power by improving physical stamina.

Green rooibos (Aspalathus Linearis) is an unfermented variant of red Rooibos that is less rich in antioxidants. It does not contain caffeine and is particularly rich in minerals and vitamin C. It helps the body to rebalance and recover the minerals lost through perspiration.

Rich in flavonoids, which combined with the high concentration of vitamin C rooibos, it neutralises free radicals, reducing the deterioration of cells and boosting the immune system. The more you exercise, the more oxygen you consume which would normally stops free radicals. Thus, drinking rooibos helps to reduce the oxidation of the body.

It’s very important to understand that after intense training, the body needs to replenish the water it has lost through sweating. A herbal tea hydrates but does not replace water reserves, so drinking plenty of water is one of the essential rules for any sports person whatever the sport, before, during and after training.

For optimal results, it’s best to buy herbal teas or plants in organic stores, from herbalists or pharmacies.

Please note, all active ingredients may have side effects and we recommend you consult a specialist who will prescribe the most suitable plants and their optimal dosage.
