In parts one and two we talked about the culture at Cannondale Pro Cycling and Matej Mohoric team-mates. Now we delve a bit into his background.
G4: How come you speak English so well?
Matej Mohoric: I always had good scores in primary school though it dipped a bit in secondary school. But Slovenia’s a small country, so everyone tries to speak good English mainly from contact with the language on the TV, radio, internet, magazines. We’re very receptive to all things English. I also speak German, but found that harder to start with.
G4: Any other languages?
Matej Mohoric: I’m learning Italian and not doing too badly. Now I’m no longer at school, I like studying languages when I have time. I need to keep my mind active and I’ve also enrolled in an on-line Sports’ Management programme.

MM: We’ll see.
G4: When did you start riding?
MM: I come from a pretty hilly area in Slovenia, so I started on a mountain bike. But a friend of mine was into road racing and encouraged me onto a road bike when I was about 12.
G4: Any other sports?
MM: My family have a farm which keeps us all pretty busy. I swam regularly from the age of five to eight.
G4: Another solitary sport, requiring plenty of training which definitely helped develop your lungs.
MM: And I kept fit helping out on the farm.
G4: So are your family farmers?
MM: No, my parents are both teachers. Mum teaches the little ones and my Dad’s a chemistry Professor teaching senior grades. I used to enjoy having him as my teacher. Standing in front of the class and answering all his difficult questions. Then I have a younger sister who was born in 1999 and the twins – one of each – two years later. They’re all very musical. The older sister was European guitar champion two years ago and my younger sister plays flute. But my brother has now stopped playing guitar. My Mum sings in a choir. You see, they’re all musical, except me. I was a bit hyperactive as a child which was why I got into sport.

After one season with Cannondale, Matej will transfer to the merged Slipstream/Cannondale team for 2015. Going from an Italian family-centred culture to an all-American one might take some getting used to but we wish him every success and we’ll be keeping a distant and fond eye on his progress.
