We continue our chat with Maciej. Yesterday, in part one, we talked about his role on the team and how he enjoys spending his all too precious free time. Today we’re talking time-trials, very pertinent since #thegreenmachine surprised many by finishing second in the opening team time-trial of the Vuelta, and G4.
G4: You’re a very good time-triallist and that’s an important discipline in grand tours and some week-long races. So do you take the lead in the train?
MB: The entire group is at very good level. I think we have found a certain equilibrium in the team with guys that work well together. At the first world time-trial championships we were fourth, last year we were disappointed to be sixth. But as you can see from the opening time-trial in the Vuelta where we were second, we’ve improved this year. And, that’s why we do a lot of time-trial training
G4: I noticed as well that your new trainer does a lot of time-trial simulation type exercises.
MB: That’s something new for me to improve power and we have also done tests on the track. I’m very happy to work with him and I’m working on improving my drag. I changed my position on the bike this year and initially lost 22 watts, but it’s now better.
We also trained specifically for the team time-trial at our training camp pre-Tirreno and the Classics. But it’s not just about the time-triallists, it’s important to perform well in team time-trials because you can help the sprinters to get the leader’s jersey.
G4: You’re a Pole on a largely Italian team who all think they’re very fashionable.
MB: I’ve spent eight years in Italy, but I’ve been out of Poland for ten years, and I enjoy living here, the lifestyle, the people, the culture……… I’m a bit Italian too now. Though, I haven’t enjoyed the weather this year, it’s rained far too much.
G4: What do you think of the G4 casual sportswear?
MB: I really like the new casual kit. It’s very comfortable; I particularly like the choice of materials and the new design, so I feel like a stylish Italian. I really like the jackets. Everything is so much more fashionable than before. I think it’s nice when you’re travelling, representing the team and you know you look nice and smart. Looking and feeling good helps the recovery process.
