With the Ardennes Classics starting this week, we’re chatting to Marco Marcato who, after six years riding for a Dutch squad, is back in the fold of an Italian team this season. He kicked off 2014 in Argentina, then returned to Europe via the Tour of Dubai to post an eighth place finish on home soil in the Trofeo Laigueglia. After Paris-Nice and Dwars door Vlaanderen, he’s been training in Tenerife in preparation for the forthcoming races.
G4: You’ve been a professional since 2005 and ridden in many races, including all three Grand Tours, but which is your favourite?
MM: For me it’s Amstel Gold Race. The parcours fits my characteristic as a rider and the atmosphere there is really fantastic. It’s so nice to be where there’s loads of people, enjoying themselves and supporting the race.

I’ve been training with some of my team mates in Teide (Tenerife) to prepare for the trio of races in the Ardennes. The landscape of the Canary Islands is truly breathtaking and the roads have very little traffic. I’ve never trained at altitude at this time of year before, so I’m curious to see how my body will react. For sure I will be ready for the Cauberg which with all the supporters is like a big disco every year.
G4: What race would you most like to win?
MM: Aside from Amstel Gold, I dream of winning a world championship and Milano-Sanremo, it’s one of the best Classics’ races.
G4: It was another really tough race this year thanks to the weather wasn’t it?

MM: The race didn’t go as we hoped. Battered for the second consecutive year by bad weather, 300km in the rain and cold seem literally endless. I was consuming energy (and calories) just fighting to stay warm. We had hoped it might be sunny once we hit the coast but no, if anything, it was worse. By the foot of the Cipressa I was out of gas and lost my legs. I tried to hold on but my race was over.
G4: Do you think with its proposed changes that the profile will suit you better in the future?
MM: I haven’t seen the new climb but for sure it’s going to be harder for the pure sprinter to win. And I think Classics riders like me will have more possibility to win and play for victory next year.
G4: You never know but G4 will be there watching.
